No, here it is more than a bug bite.
Female mosquitoes often carry parasites.
Malaria is real and serious here.
Over 3,000 kids DIE every year from it.
There are drugs to prevent you from getting sick.
Most people in Africa cannot afford it.
You can cut your chances of getting sick in half by sleeping under nets.
Most people in Africa cannot afford those either.
Two of our staff and two of our students kids have been treated for Malaria this past month.
It is just accepted that people get it and some die from it in this country.
This is all hard for me to think about, coming from a place where people think they have the right to any and all medical care to keep them from getting sick. And in the western world it just doesn't happen that people die regularly from preventable illnesses.
So what to do:
Ron & I do take drugs to avoid getting sick, we can afford it.
We do sleep under a mosquito net trying not to get bites.
Ron has been the transport for several Malaria treatment trips to the hospital recently.
CMF is distributing nets to people who are at high risk for getting sick.
The school has drugs to treat the adult students while they are in school.
Guess this is all part of living in a third world country.
Sometimes just staying healthy so you can help the person that is right in front of you is what you are called to do.
