SKYPE anyone?

Technology is very different these days for missionaries compared to years ago when all they had was regular mail taking several weeks for delivery. I am not into all of the newest gadgets available but there are a few things I am thankful we will have while in Africa.

  • laptop computer
  • ipod
  • cell phones

The cell phones will be for Arusha team communication and the ipod will help us have music in our home to listen to. While the computer will be a work tool it will also be my means to connect with everyone here in the states. Not only can I send emails and write on our blog, I can actually talk to people with it.

We have spent time these last weeks getting my kids and parents signed up with SKYPE accounts and video cameras so we can see each other while we are talking. It has been interesting getting things set up; helping our parents go from dial up to high speed Internet, being able to see our kids and grand kids across the country (Texas) and around the world (Egypt), trying some of the fun things you can do like load animal pictures and have them do your talking (it is hysterical).

A couple of great things about it- it is actually free (not much is these days) to make computer to computer calls, and you can call from your computer to a regular phone line for a fraction of the cost of a regular phone to phone call.

Really I can't wait to make that first call from Arusha to Denver to say "We Made It" and at the same time see my famlies smiles.

So feel free to SKYPE us sometime!

JaneAnn, it is so nice to know things are moving forward for you and Ron on your journey to Africa! Everyone still mentions you fondly at work. Wishing you and your family well.
