What are you reading?

I am having lots of fun learning as much as I can about Africa from different kinds of books.

A friend told us about the Africa Bible Commentary- written by 70 African Scholars. As Ron and I study it with our Bible reading we are expanding our knowledge and views of scripture, interpreting and applying the Bible in light of African cultures and realities today. It is a valuable tool for our preparations.

Here is something totally different, the books by Wilbur Smith. A sort of Indiana Jones action series with a social conscience set in Africa. These have been a good kind of distraction, adventures for me to get lost in during my long waits at the airport.

A fun read was African Friends and Money Matters, talking about how Africans and Westerners each uses and manages money and other resources in very different ways. Here are just a few things I will need to adjust to; Africans find security in ambiguous arrangements, in many African societies people do not assume that all people are to be treated as equals, to answer a request in a negative and direct way is an offense.

I have a lot to learn, but if you know me, I am loving every minute of it.
